Engineering for One Planet (EOP) strives to transform engineering education to equip all engineers with the skills, knowledge, and understanding they need to protect and improve our planet and our lives.
This edition includes updates from the EOP Network Convening in Baltimore, spreading the word about EOP at conferences from Brazil to the UK, a preview of upcoming events, and an invitation to help build the future of our movement by contributing to the revision of the EOP Framework.
Awards & Opportunities
New NSF-Lemelson Foundation Awards Announced
The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), in partnership with The Lemelson Foundation, supported five new projects for seven awardees through the Research in the Formation of Engineers (RFE) program. The funding partnership fosters the integration of sustainability across engineering education, supporting education projects aligned with the goals of Engineering for One Planet. Congratulations to the principal investigators, their teams, and their institutions:, Brown University, Colorado School of Mines, Purdue University, University of Colorado at Boulder, University of Pennsylvania, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and West Virginia University. Since 2024, the NSF-Lemelson collaboration has supported 10 projects comprising 13 awardees across 15 institutions.
Call for Lecturers: World Sustainable Development Teach-In Day (WSDTID)
The Sustainable Development and Climate Change Management Research and Transfer Centre at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences in Germany is seeking experts and educators to deliver engaging lectures and keynote presentations on sustainable development topics focusing on “Sustainability Research in Action: Local Solutions, Global Impact.” WSDTID will be held online November 19.

Final Call: Contribute to the EOP Framework Revision
The EOP Framework is the cornerstone of the EOP initiative. First drafted in 2020 with input from nearly 100 contributors and launched in 2022 after receiving more than 1,000 comments, it’s time for an update! We want your feedback to make the next version even better! We’ll be collecting your thoughts through various channels all year, with a final deadline of September 30. The revised framework is scheduled for publication in 2026. We look forward to your contributions!

Community of Support – Integrating into Education and Society Green and Sustainability Knowledge and Skills
Join EOP in this new initiative from the UN Higher Education Sustainability Initiative (HESI). The Community of Support will provide practical tools and connect peers looking to integrate sustainability knowledge and skills in education.
This fall, EOP will be co-hosting a series of virtual roundtable discussions with How to Change the World and its partners. Stay tuned for event reports to hear from leading voices with provocative ideas on how to prepare students for the future of Green Jobs.
Cindy Anderson, EOP Strategy Consultant with The Lemelson Foundation, attended the biennial Engineering Education for Sustainable Development (EESD2025) Conference. This global forum attracts engineering educators and academics with an interest in embedding sustainability in their curricula. She worked with a dozen educators to create climate-focused curricular materials for engineering courses using EOP resources.

With dozens of EOP-related sessions, numerous informal gatherings, and a hopping booth in the Exposition Hall, EOP community members shared their knowledge with hundreds of attendees and had an amazing time at this year’s ASEE conference. This was also the year that EOP Network colleagues Emma Telepo and Reese Simancek, with support from EOP Network Engagement Coordinator Hadley Willman, unveiled plans for the new EOP Student Ambassador Program.

The EOP Network’s eighth convening was hosted at ABET headquarters in Baltimore thanks to EOP Network members Michael Milligan and Amanda Taylor from ABET. The participants strengthened connections, paving the way to identify projects to further their work and the goals of EOP. Among the exciting new projects are: mapping industry needs onto curriculum, researching how to support more faculty in curricular change, and creating all manner of teaching content.

Cindy Cooper participated in an inspiring discussion on the role of education in enabling individuals and communities to thrive under adverse conditions. Watch the presentation.

Cindy Anderson was invited to participate in this convening of 42 people — from various professional societies, community colleges and industry — to deepen relationships and build new connections to community colleges as a vital place for sustainability to increase opportunities for students entering the engineering workforce.
